Basic genetics

Learning outcomes:

 

By the end of the module, we hope that you will be able to:

 

  • describe the basic structure of the cell and the different types of cell division

 

  • categorise chromosome abnormalities into those of structure and number

 

  • break down the structure of DNA, RNA and genes and the characteristics of protein synthesis via transcription and translation

 

  • categorise mutations based on their effect on DNA structure as well as function

 

  • illustrate the difference between genotype and phenotype and gene distribution in a population

 

  • define the laws of Mendelian genetics and the characteristics of single gene disorders

 

  • explain the inheritance of diseases that do not follow Mendelian laws

 

  • outline the structure of the genome including the categories of repetitive DNA.
